Bootstrap is a free, open-source front-end framework for building responsive websites and web applications, providing pre-built CSS and JavaScript components like grids, navigation bars, and forms. It's one of the most widely adopted front-end frameworks in the web's history, and remains in active use across a large share of existing sites.

Bootstrap Lifecycle Explained

Bootstrap has followed a formal Long Term Support policy since 2019. Each major version starts in active development, then transitions to Active LTS once frozen, where it still receives bug fixes, security updates, and documentation updates. After that, it moves to Maintenance LTS, a deep freeze where only critical bug fixes and critical security updates land, before finally reaching end of life. Bootstrap 5 is the current version and is presently in Active LTS, with no Maintenance LTS date set yet.

Is Bootstrap end of life?

Not as a project. Bootstrap 5 is actively maintained and in Active LTS. Versions 2 through 4 have all reached end of life.

Is Bootstrap 4 outdated?

Yes, it's past end of life as of January 2023 and receives no further updates, including security fixes. Bootstrap 5 is the actively maintained version.

Will there be Bootstrap 6?

There's no officially announced timeline for a Bootstrap 6 as of this writing. Bootstrap 5 remains the current Active LTS version.

Is Bootstrap still used in 2026?

Yes, it remains one of the most widely used front-end frameworks, both in legacy codebases and new projects, and continues to receive active development under its official LTS plan.
