Spring Framework has been a foundation of enterprise Java development since 2004, providing the dependency injection, data access, and MVC infrastructure that Spring Boot and much of the modern Java ecosystem build on.

Spring Framework Lifecycle Explained

Each Spring Framework generation gets a period of Open Source Support, during which the current feature branch receives free security updates and bug fixes from the Spring community. Enterprise Support, through Broadcom's Tanzu Spring offering, runs alongside that OSS timeline as an optional paid tier with support from Spring experts, then continues on its own for several more years after OSS support ends. Tanzu Spring is VMware's Spring commercial arm, which Broadcom now owns following its 2023 acquisition of VMware. Spring Framework 7.0 is the current production line, released in November 2025, with 6.2 as the final feature branch of the previous generation.

JDK and Jakarta EE Compatibility

Each Spring Framework generation supports a specific range of JDK and Jakarta EE (or the older Java EE) versions, and this range is often the practical limiter on how long a team can safely stay on an older version, independent of the framework's own support dates.

The jump from Spring Framework 5.3 to 6.0 is a genuine break, not just a version bump. It moved from the javax namespace to jakarta, in step with the same Jakarta EE transition that affected other Java software like Apache Tomcat and Apache CXF, and it raised the minimum JDK from 8 to 17. Teams on 5.3 face a real migration project to reach the current generation, not a routine upgrade.

Is the Spring Framework outdated?

No. Spring Framework 7.0 is the current, actively developed production line, released in November 2025. Concerns about Spring's future usually center on Broadcom's 2023 acquisition of VMware and its effect on Spring's commercial support model, not on the framework's technical development, which remains active.

Is Spring 5 still supported?

Not through open source channels. Spring Framework 5.3, the final 5.x feature branch, reached the end of open source support in August 2024. Enterprise support through Tanzu Spring remains available for organizations that need it.

Is Spring Boot still relevant in 2026?

Spring Boot is a separate project built on top of Spring Framework, with its own version numbers and support timeline distinct from the Framework itself.
